3 Reasons Why Your Period Is Irregular

3 Reasons Why Your Period Might be Irregular

We know that being a woman is a beautiful thing, but our unique makeup can make us vulnerable than we think, especially when it comes to our reproductive health. Irregular period or amenorrhea is one of the most common conditions that a woman will experience in her lifetime. But if this becomes persistent for more than 3 months, it’s a clear indication that is something is off. According to Dr. Faith Suluen, OB GYNE, while heredity and genetic makeup play a part, an irregular period can also be brought about by our lifestyle, work, or weather condition.

The pituitary, ovarian, adrenal, and thyroid glands and the brain’s hypothalamus regulate and control menstruation and hormones. A regular and moderately pain-free monthly period is a manifestation of a healthy reproductive system and balanced hormones. On the contrary, irregular or missed periods and intense dysmenorrhea are signs that hormonal levels may be too low or too high.

Aside from amenorrhea, there are other conditions of irregular periods. Women who suffer from oligomenorrhea or infrequent menstruation only get to have their period six to eight times in a year. Others affected by metrorrhagia bleed in between menstrual periods. Other women experience menometrorrhagia marked by abnormally heavy, prolonged, and irregular bleeding. They bleed more than 80ml of blood, which is the normal volume for the entire cycle.

While women, in general, tolerate a lot, sudden, abnormal, and heavy bleeding should not go unheeded. It can be caused by:

1. Structural abnormalities in uterus

Uterine polyps are formed by the overgrowth of tissue in the inner lining of the uterus. Their size may range from the size of a sesame seed to the size of a golf ball. Although benign, they cause unpredictable periods, excessive bleeding, bleeding in between periods, and infertility. Another abnormality in the uterus can be in a form of myoma, non-cancerous tumors that grow at the muscle layers of the uterus that underlie heavy, painful periods. Moreover, adenomyosis or the condition in which the inner lining of the uterus breaks through the muscles of the uterus promotes menstrual cramps and heavy periods. While all these are non-life threatening, frequent pain and bleeding that come with them can negatively impact women’s lives.

2. Non-structural causes

Another cause of menstrual irregularities are bleeding disorders such as leukemia, platelet dysfunctions, or coagulation deficiencies. Platelets are factors in the blood that help it clot and prevent bleeding. Platelet deficiencies cause heavy bleeding in women.

3. Hormonal Imbalance

Hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, adrenaline, and insulin secreted by our body’s various glands and organs regulate our physiology and behavior. Because of their crucial role in our bodies, any slight imbalance can cause side effects throughout our bodies. Estrogen dominance causes changes in sleep patterns, weight, and appetite, intensified perceived stress, and slowed metabolism. Adrenal fatigue stirs up fatigue, muscle pains, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, brain fog, and reproductive issues. And hypothyroidism slows down metabolism, prompts weight gain, fatigue, irritability, and irregular periods.

When you miss three or more periods in a year, get your period more frequent than every 21 days or less often than every 35 days, or experience unusually heavy and painful periods, it’s time to see your doctor.
