Top 5 Most Common Female Reproductive Cancers

Top 5 Reproductive Cancers
Knowing about the most common cancers and their risk factors can be life-saving. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the most common female reproductive cancers are breast, cervix, ovary, uterus, and vagina.
Here are some facts about the top five most common female reproductive cancers you should not ignore:

Breast

Filipino women who suffers breast cancer have the highest survival rate compared to those who suffer from the other four.
Breast cancer is the most common among other reproductive cancers. Women who are taking combined oral contraceptives or those who have been taking them in the past 10 years are more at risk of having breast cancer. Post-menopausal women on hormone therapy are also more prone. The Philippine Cancer Control Program cannot emphasize enough the importance of annual clinical breast examination by a medical professional and monthly breast self-examination.

Cervical

Cervical cancer is often curable if detected early. Studies show that the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, has a very strong association with cervical cancer. When exposed to HPV, the body’s immune system readily defends the body. However, in some individuals, HPV can develop a persistent infection which contributes to the process that leads to cancer. Women who had early sexual activities, have multiple sexual partners, other sexually transmitted infections weakened the immune system, and women who smoke are highly at risk. The Cervical Cancer Control of the Philippines recommends regular pap tests and appropriate counseling about sexual practices.

Ovary

Family history, personal history of breast, uterine, or colon cancer, no history of pregnancy, and endometriosis are the risk factors of ovarian cancer. Hormone treatments for the transgender people and post-menopausal women are also contributory factors. Researchers found that taking birth control pills, breastfeeding, pregnancy, and surgical procedures reduce a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Uterine

This type of cancer usually occurs in women past menopause. Postmenopausal women have a high risk for uterine cancer if they are obese, started menstruating early, went through menopause late, have diabetes or high blood pressure, have no children, have infertility or irregular period history, and uterine, colorectal, or breast cancer family history. Women who are suffering from such cancer experience unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge, trouble urinating, pelvic pain, and  pain during intercourse. Taking birth control pills, maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle, and managing diabetes is the known possible ways to prevent uterine cancer.

Vagina

Nine out of 10 vaginal cancer cases are associated with HPV. Similar to other cancer types above, alcohol consumption, smoking, early sexual activity, multiple sexual partners, and history of HIV and cervical cancer also increase vaginal cancer risk. Having regular pelvic exams and pap tests, receiving an HPV vaccine, smoking and alcohol cessation may reduce the risk of vaginal cancer and HPV-related cancers.
